Tongariro Volcano Climbing

We climbed a volcano today! There was crazy wind, snow, horrible smells, lots of steep inclines that made us fall... and incredible views. The Tongariro volcano last erupted in November, 2012 and remains active today. It was incredible. Also awesome to witness were the hot pools which surrounded us at the summit. The rocks were so red because of the amount of the oxidized iron. I've never seen anything like it. The 19.4 kilometer climb we made was the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's oldest national park. The hike includes amazing natural scenery, unique landforms and the volcanic peaks of Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Ruapehu. The Alpine Crossing is considered a world-renowned trek, one of the best one-day treks available in New Zealand and among the top ten single-day treks in the world. We were warned that the weather can be unpredictable, and we found that first-hand when the snow began.

We made friends!

Makenzi fell.
